According to Aimar Rakko, head of the hunting and aquatic life office of the Environmental Board, there are a total of 328 hunting areas in Estonia. 18 of the total needed to find a user via a competition this year. "Controversies have arisen in the hunting areas of Vormsi and Kaansoo during the granting of permits, which is why the Environment Board has not been able to issue a new right of use permit. In the Sangaste hunting area, which is also currently unused, the competition was postponed due to the division of the hunting area into two new areas - the Sangaste and Keen hunting areas," said Rakko.
In the hunting areas left unused due to the expiry of the previous permits, the Environmental Board itself organizes hunting. "For big game hunting, an agreement is made with the adjacent hunting areas or with the RMK, small game hunting is organized by each landowner himself and the permit is issued by the Environmental Board," explained the head of the Hunting and Aquatic Life Bureau of the Environmental Board.
In order to hunt small game, a free-form application signed by the landowner must be submitted to the Environmental Board, which must contain the landowner's name, address and contact information, as well as the names of the persons hunting with personal identification codes. The application must be sent to the Environmental Board's e-mail address info@keskkonnaamet.ee.
The agency regulates the number of big game in cooperation with the user of the adjacent hunting area. In Vorms, the number of big game is regulated by the RMK due to the lack of adjacent hunting areas. Permits for big game are paid, and to obtain a permit, you must contact RMK jahindustalitus jaht@rmk.ee. In the Sangaste and Keen hunting areas, the Valgamaa Jahimeeste Ühistu deals with big game hunting. Regarding Kaansoo, negotiations with the adjacent hunting areas are still ongoing.
The hunt is organized by the Environmental Board as a temporary solution until a new user is found for the hunting area.
The previous hunting area usage rights were valid until May 31.

In a few cases, however, the competition has stalled and 4 hunting areas currently have no users. In order to allow hunting to continue, the Environmental Board temporarily organizes hunting in these areas.
