"If it is not a product of the chemical industry but fat, then this is good news from the point of view of the environment," said Himot Maran, adviser to the Environmental Board. "Grease pollution is rather unpleasant and causes dirt problems for people and pets, but in nature, it does not cause significant damage."
Yesterday, the Rescue Board, in cooperation with the Environmental Board, manually collected the pollution on a one-and-a-half-kilometer beach strip in the Tagalahe area.
According to Margus Lindmäe, the head of the Saaremaa rescue region, it took nine people less than three hours, and a total of 240 kg of pollution was collected, which is a small amount in terms of pollution. "As of now, no more pollution is known in Saaremaa," stated Lindmäe.
Given that the found pollution does not threaten nature, no cleaning campaign will be embarked for the pollution found in the stretch of nearly 20 kilometers on the coast of Hiiumaa. "However, we are grateful to all residents and friends of Hiiumaa who are ready to contribute to a cleaner natural environment and want to clean up grease pollution," said Hergo Tasuja, rural municipality mayor of Hiiumaa.
